What do you wanna change?
Ok, there are probably a lot of things that you want to change, but let’s just pick one specific behavior to change for now!
What is the most harmful or disruptive behavior that you do daily or weekly to get in the way of you being the most successful that you can be for yourself and for others?
Or what is something that you would like to do differently that could make you feel better or make you more efficient in your lifestyle?
Some of you may say, “Morgan, I wanna change the way my nose looks!”
Well, that’s not a behavior you can work on.
You need to see a plastic surgeon for that (even though I am certain your nose is just fine!)
Others may say, “Morgan, I can’t stand the way this dishwasher doesn’t dry my dishes right!”
Well, outside of motivating you enough to read the owner’s manual or calling a repair specialist, I would say, that the dishwasher is in control of that!
How about this instead?
“Morgan, I smoke 2 packs of cigarettes a day and I want to quit.”
Or
“Morgan, I just can’t stop picking my nose while watching season finales. And I want to stop.”
Here are the key words: “Want to.”
In order to change your behavior, you have to want to change it.
“Morgan, my wife tells me that I need to start taking out the trash on Fridays instead of Saturdays, but I don’t want to. I like taking it out on Fridays.”
Well, then, if it is something that you are not ready to change yet, for whatever reason, then this may not work for ya!
You have to WANT TO change your own behavior in order to change the behavior!
Now, if you said, “Morgan, my wife tells me that I need to start taking out the trash on Fridays instead of Saturdays or she is going to leave me. And I don’t want her to leave me…”
Then, we may be able to work on this!
Why?
Because there is some motivation there for ya!
We do what we do because we are motivated on some aspect to do it.
- You go to work because you are motivated to earn money.
- You put headphones on your head because you are motivated to block out the sound of your neighbor’s dog barking.
- You call your mother because you are motivated to find out some information that only she can provide to you.
We may not always recognize the drive behind our actions, but there must be some there in order for us to be driven enough to engage in the behavior.
In order to change behavior that has worked for us up to this point, for whatever reason (we will get into this more later), we have to have some sort of desire, drive, or motivation to change it!
So, let me ask you this again:
What are you motivated to change in your life to make it better?
What do you have the drive to do?
What is your idea of the most desirable outcome versus the one that you currently engage in regularly?
Got an answer?
Good!
Oh, not yet?
That’s okay….take your time….
Still Not Sure?
